The two circles on the mother-of-pearl dial forms the shape of a gourd. In ancient Chinese folklore, the gourd is associated with the Daoist practice of cultivating longevity and immortality. It is believed that the gourd has the power to absorb evil spirits and is therefore used to ward off evil and bring good luck.
