The Forbidden City is the largest existing palace building in the world, it covers an area of 720,000 square meters and a construction area of about 150,000 square meters. As the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Forbidden City has always paid attention to fire prevention.
There are a total of 308 large iron, copper and gilded copper vats in the Forbidden City, these are called Menhai or 门海 in Chinese, and were set up in the Ming and Qing dynasties for fire prevention. Each Menhai can store more than 3,000 liters of water, ensuring that the water storage tank is full at all times. Rings are clamped on the Menhai with lion shaped metal parts. The enamel watch dial recreates the side faces of two "lions" on Menhai in symmetry. The indices 6 and 12 are written in small seal script.
