Xīng Yuán is the pinyin form of the Chinese characters 星垣, which literally means “Star Enclosures.” In traditional Chinese astronomy, the night sky is divided into three major enclosures, with the Ziwei Enclosure (紫微垣 Purple Forbidden Enclosure) at the center, representing the emperor’s celestial palace, the Taiwei Enclosure (太微垣 Supreme Palace Enclosure) representing the court and officials, and the Tianshi Enclosure (天市垣 Heavenly Market Enclosure) representing the common people and marketplaces.
